The problem is clear for all of us to see – especially when there is an inversion. Half of our air pollution comes from our vehicles. Air quality demands our immediate attention. There is no ‘silver bullet’ so we need to pursue multiple policies in order to improve our air quality: encouraging the use of mass transit, incentives for employers to encourage mass transit or carpool use, require vehicle emissions testing in all urban counties.

Solutions on a larger scale include using alternative energy: solar, wind and other renewable sources. Utah can do better.

Utah has a very active solar power industry. Some of our state’s fundamental policies do not reflect the benefits to the public. For example the Public Service Commission is not allowed to consider the environmental impacts of solar power in their decision-making. This is short sighted and must be changed to better reflect the benefits of solar energy on our environment.
